Step 1 of 6

Before We Start

You'll need a cloth measuring tape — the kind used for clothing. A soft fabric tape or a piece of string you can mark and measure works too. This assessment takes 3 minutes and gives you an accurate picture of your breathing function.

1
Find the bottom of your front rib
It sits directly below your nipple line. Press gently until you feel the bottom edge of your ribcage.
2
Loop the tape around your body at that point
Keep it snug so it doesn't droop at the back. Stand in front of a mirror if needed.
3
Take two measurements
First on a full inhale. Then on a complete exhale. Write both numbers down — you'll need them.
Why this works
The difference between your inhale and exhale circumference is your respiratory amplitude — how much your diaphragm actually moves when you breathe. A functional breather expands 2.5–4+ inches. Most adults expand less than 1 inch because they breathe with their chest and shoulders instead of their diaphragm.

Step 4 of 6 — Location of Motion

Where Do You Move?

Take a normal breath right now and watch yourself in a mirror or have someone observe you. Where does the movement happen — and which direction does it go?

How to tell
Vertical: Chest rises, shoulders lift, neck may tighten. Movement goes UP.

Horizontal: Belly and sides expand outward. No shoulder or chest rise. Movement goes OUT — this is optimal diaphragmatic breathing.

Hybrid: Some outward expansion but with some shoulder and chest involvement.
⬆️ Vertical Chest rises · shoulders lift · movement goes UP
↗️ Hybrid Some outward expansion but chest still involved
↔️ Horizontal Belly and sides expand · no shoulder rise · optimal
Step 5 of 6 — Range of Motion

Your Measurements

Using the tape at the bottom of your front rib — enter your inhale and exhale circumference measurements.

Getting accurate measurements
Inhale measurement: Take the biggest breath you can. Hold it. Read the tape.

Exhale measurement: Push all the air out completely. Hold it. Read the tape.

Use inches or centimeters — just be consistent. The difference between the two numbers is your respiratory amplitude.
